Neil Howk's last day with the National Park Service

Neil Howk  has been instrumental in sharing the story and the beauty of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore with visitors and locals alike. He is the author of HIkers Guide to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

After 33 years at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, December 27, 2016 was Neil Howk's last day in a ranger uniform.

What started as just a fun summer at Yellowstone in 1976 led to a love affair with national parks, a fabulous career, and a wonderful wife, home and family. I’ve enjoyed the wonders of priceless experiences like marveling at eruptions of Old Faithful while enjoying the sulfurous bouquet of the geyser basins, scrambling across the fossil wall at Dinosaur National Monument, resting on a hillside watching the sun set across the sea of peaks forming the Brooks Range at Gates of the Arctic, and enjoying the music of the singing sands at Julian Bay on Stockton Island. What could be more rewarding than to share that sense of wonder with the public? It has been a blessing to not just live in some of the most beautiful places in the world, but to work with such a talented, committed and enjoyable group of peers. I’ll be thinking of all the wonderful times gone by as I listen to the bands play Auld Lang Syne later this week. Happy Trails.
