(In Collaboration with Madeline Island Book Club)
Leader: Julie Zickefoose, author
The Madeline Book Club is joining together with the Madeline Island Wilderness Preserve to host this special June ZOOM. What better way to enjoy the arrival of summer than with a nature read and discussion of this delightful book! Thanks to former college classmate, Joe Scarry, the author will be zooming with us with funding provided by the La Pointe Center for the Arts and MIWP.
The author, a naturalist, bird painter, and songbird rehabilitator, shares her passion and curiosity for “the zone where birds interact with people … the moment when her gaze meets the bright bead of its eye.” She takes care of four astonishingly tiny hummingbirds, “hatched from eggs no bigger than black-eyed peas,” who dominate her life with feedings every 20 minutes. Each chapter is illustrated with Zickfoose’s stunning watercolor paintings and is devoted to a different bird from bluebirds to sandhill cranes.
The book mixes humor, natural history, and memoir to give readers an intimate story of a life lived among wild birds while raising a family, as well.
