Join me for demonstrations of hands-on things you can do to help protect yard trees from spongy moth defoliation.
Learn to identify spongy moth egg masses
Destroy egg masses
Trap caterpillars as they crawl up the trunk to feed: Make a burlap band trap
For details and images regarding these activities, see Yard Tree Management on the Wisconsin DNR Spongy moth website https://spongymoth.wi.gov
Note from WI DNR’s Andrea Diss-Torrance re the lounge chair pics: Wipe down your loungers with a cleaner and then with rubbing alcohol to ensure the hairs are degraded and won’t cause bare skin to be irritated. Then cover or take the cushions in when you aren’t out there on them. These little caterpillars are shedding hairs and bathing suits don’t provide much protection from them.
